Description: After nearly a century of looking both inward and outward, Richard Mayhewcreates what he calls "mindscapes," the essence of places remembered orimagined. His brilliant paintings allude to an "invented consciousness," aspirituality and connection to the land, inherited from his Native Americanand African American ancestors. The artist himself was immersed in the CivilRights struggle and is a lauded member of the National Academy of Art, but heresists depicting overt themes of ethnicity or culture. Saturated with colorand illusion, Mayhew's works evoke both the earthly and the transcendental. Twelve of his luminous paintings are on display in this calendar.
