Description: Kenojuak Ashevak is widely considered a Canadian national treasure. Shewas a groundbreaking artist for Kinngait Studios, in the Arctic territory ofNunavut, and ultimately a pioneer of modern Inuit art. After establishing herreputation in 1960 with The Enchanted Owl-an image so popular it wasreproduced on a Canadian postage stamp-she worked nearly nonstop. Shecontributed to Kinngait's (Cape Dorset's) print collection almost every yearand completed countless special commissions. Ashevak loved to make pictures ofbirds, particularly owls. Reflecting on her art, she said, "I am the light ofhappiness, and I am a dancing owl. "
